First, this is rutting season so be extra careful on the roads, especially at dawn and dusk, as deer are on the move.
As anyone who has hit one can attest, while the deer may get the worst of it they are surprisingly big animals and can really damage a car and injure its occupants if they come flying through the windscreen.
Plus if you do hit one and it's flailing around by the side of the road, don't go near it. Flailing hooves and antlers can cause a lot of damage. Instead call the police who know how to handle a wounded animal.
Second, if you go running or biking in the evening, wear some reflective gear.
While we are coming off daylight saving time this weekend, which will give us an hour more daylight in the evenings, it's still warm enough to go jogging and it's scary how many people walk or run partly in the road without any kind of reflective gear.
Third, if you use your cell phone while driving, don't speed.
Twice in recent weeks I have witnessed cars screeching to a halt in front of terrified pedestrians and the drivers in both cases were talking on their cell phones.
And texting while driving is moronic and should be outlawed.
