Sageworks has come up with some interesting numbers that illuminate the woes besetting the auto industry, both at the motor vehicle parts manufacturing level and at the new car dealership level. It collated sales and profits per employee for both industries and found 2008 sales at $153,333 per employee in the motor vehicle parts manufacturing industry, down from $260,054 in 2007. Profit per employee was even more dismal, showing a loss of $13,609 in 2008 compared to a profit of $10,922 in 2007. Sales per employee at new car dealerships were $465,556 last year, down from $620,571 in 2007. And 2008 profits were a dismal $349 per employee compared with $4,173 in the prior year.
