Here we go! As I noted last week, once The New York Times gets stuck into an issue, its not long before mountains start to move. It's been running a series of articles on the manifest dangers of texting while driving and now federal action appears to be on the horizon.
Here is a link to today's NYT:
States that do not ban texting by drivers could forfeit up to hundreds of millions of dollars in federal highway funds under legislation introduced Wednesday in the Senate.
the measure, states would have two years to outlaw the sending of text and e-mail messages by motorists or lose 25 percent of their highway funds each year until the monies are depleted.
"Studies show this is far more dangerous than talking on a phone while driving or driving while drunk, which is astounding," said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, one of four Senators to introduce the proposed legislation.
