For a company that has grown on its reputation for reliability, Toyota has added to egg that was already on its face by announcing it will fix or replace 4 million accelerator pedals.
A number of the pedals had gotten stuck on floor mats, causing unintended acceleration. As The New York Times put it, the problem "has stripped some of the luster off the carmaker's reputation for safety and reliability."
The move follows a recall of 110,000 of its 2000-3 full-size Tundra pickups because of rusting frames. And that followed last year's recall of 813,000 Tacoma trucks for rust issues.
