Backseat Driver: Don't insult my truck

I hope General Motors is going to jump on the bandwagon and make hay out of Scott Brown's black 2005 GMC Canyon pickup truck with nearly 200,000 miles on the clock.

It's probably the most famous vehicle in the nation right now. Brown traveled all over Massachusetts in it as he hustled his way into the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's Senate seat.

Brown, a little known Republican state senator, upset Democrat Attorney General Martha Coakley Tuesday in an election that will have pundits nattering for months if not years.

Meanwhile, his truck, which is the GMC version of the Chevrolet Colorado, played a significant role in his victory. Brown did indeed drive it all over Massachusetts and made it "a symbol of humility, hard work and rugged ideals," according to USA Today.

He put the truck "front and center in the campaign, showing up at campaign rallies in it and using it in television ads," the paper reported, adding, "He came dressed in jeans and work shirts."

And when President Obama unwisely questioned which way the truck was headed during an appearance in Massachusetts last weekend to inject life into Coakley's moribund campaign, Brown had a snappy response:

"When he criticized my truck, that's where I draw the line," he said.

Funny and down to earth and a brilliant echo of President Roosevelt's 1944 defense of his beloved Scotch Terrier Fala:

"I am accustomed to hearing malicious falsehoods about myself - such as that old, worm-eaten chestnut that I have represented myself as indispensable. But I think I have a right to resent, to object to libelous statements about my dog."
