An investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has prompted Toyota to recall about 82,000 hybrid SUVs for a stalling problem, according to The New York Times.

The recall covers about 45,500 Highlander hybrids and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h models from the 2006-7 model years.

The safety agency began its investigation in February, after receiving 32 complaints from owners who said their hybrid vehicles stalled.

Toyota said it found that transistors inside the hybrid system's inverter could overheat, causing a failure. That would at least reduce power and could cause the vehicle to stop, the automaker said.

A Toyota spokesman emailed the NYT that the automaker was not aware of any accidents and had been investigating the condition when NHTSA announced its investigation in February.
