  I cannot believe that so many people are complaining about Toyota for being responsible, coming forward and addressing the gas pedal issue. If this was any other major car company, nothing would be of the sort. They would be waiting for a class action lawsuit before jumping into action. My family bought 2 brand new Chevy pickups in 1997 and both of the transmissions went in them, as well as all of our other family members and friends that owned 1997 Chevy pickups or Chevy Suburbans. And yet, GM claimed that there was nothing wrong with their transmissions and were not aware of any other similar complaints. We knew of 7 vehicles within a 4 month span that had to have transmissions replaced at $2500.00 each. I will never own another GM vehicle. With the way Toyota is handling this issue, I would be more inclined to buy Toyota because they are standing by their product and taking appropriate actions.

  While I can understand Toyota representatives wishing LaHood didn't say that owners of effected models should stop driving their cars and take them to a Toyota dealer for repair, it was the correct response and may not have gone far enough. I wish that LaHood hadn't bowed to industry pressure to modify his statement. He should say the same thing whenever a dangerous safety defect is discovered in any other model car. Furthermore, he should have required the manufacturer to pay for the towing of the vehicle for service and even to order the vehicles off the road. To do otherwise is to encourage people to drive cars with dangerous safety defectsqlbm. You can bet your life that airplanes with similar safety defects would be grounded until repairs were made.
