  • 4:19 PM Mark on Recession claims Newport Autocenter

Trust me, the recession had nothing to do with why these crooks went out of business. With the reputation they had with the people on that island, I am surprised they stayed in business as long as they did.

  • 8:18 AM David Zapatka on Plum Beach Lighthouse plates pass 3,000

It's not clear to me if the writers above understand the undertaking involved with creating the license plate, establishing a database of potential customers, designing the plate, collecting the applications, coordinating the effort through DMV, getting the plates made, distributing them, repainting the lighthouse, trying to raise additional funds, all being done by volunteers. This was and is no small feat, all while following stringent guidelines set forth by the General Assembly and the DMV. If it were up to me, we would have the PBL plates for all makes of license plates, but the plain fact of the matter is that we have no choice because of the DMV rules. We're simply following them, not trying to break them. The sailboat plate is offered by the DMV, not another outside agency, hence it doesn't fall under the same restrictions as the PBL plate.

Mr. Zapatka, Has the public been given a choice on if they wanted the PBl Plate for other plate types. I would think that if the number of people that wanted the plate The DMV would change there way of thinking.

Mr. Zapatka, Your comment stating that there will never be a PBL plate for anything other than passenger cars with 5 digits, shows that your organization does not care that other residents in the state would like to support your cause. It is the DMV that rules because they claim it to be cost prohibitive. Why would it be cost prohibitive the sail boat is made for both commerical and passenger plates.

Clearly we had an oversight when the bill was written for the PBL Plate. Once we saw the mistake, we approached the General Assembly and proposed a change with the bill to allow commercial plates. The DMV heard of our proposal and vigorously opposed the new bill saying it would be cost prohibitive for them to issue all other types of plates with the lighthouse on them. Once we heard of their objections, we rescinded the bill application since the DMV had been so helpful to us with the PBL passenger plate bill. Lesson learned, but the result is that here will never be a PBL plate for anything other than passenger cars.

I wish the plates could be made for commerical vehicles and other plate formats such as the new plates the DMV are now passing out.

The ideal is over 50 years old, firat use of natural gs in cars I believe wias in Italy, late 1950s-early 1960s, We converted fleets in Kansas City and Providence and bus fleets in cities like Kansas City, Chicago, New York City and Washington , DC. All those fllets used natural gas for a few years, but I do not know the history. I suspect with no one pushing the activity, it was easily sicarded. I won't go on, but there is a large story and a lot of people have a lot of experience that can still be tapped. Hope you get some where with the idea.

But with which motor? The 1.2 liter only makes clocks in at about 70bhp. Even the 1.4 liter @ 100bhp will struggle with 4 adults. We hear about the 4-door and the electric 500s (really?) but what about the 500 Abarth? That's what people are interested in.

  • 7:35 AM david shepherd on Driving the outdated Merritt Parkway

"It's nose-to-nose at 65+ mph with no shoulders and just a barrier between the opposing lines of traffic." That would be nose-to-tail, I think. And though your observation is correct--there is little to no margin for error on the Merritt--the road does provide an exhilarating ride for the boy racer within; the landscape and roadway in some stretches are reminiscent of old images of fabled US road racing courses, like Torrey Pines or Laguna Seca. You simply re-adjust your expectations and timing, and go with the flow. Zoom-zoom. You can always plod along in the right lane, leaving the left to us more urgent drivers, but be sure to allow for the merging traffic at the many on-ramps...
